The Shoap: A Taste of Scotland in the Heart of London

Nestled on St John Street near Angel station, The Shoap has quickly established itself as London's first authentic Scottish deli, bakery and café. Founded by Glaswegian Gregg Boyd, this unique establishment grew from his popular Auld Hag food business, which began as a lockdown delivery service in 2021 before evolving into market stalls, pop-ups, and finally this permanent location in February 2024.

Signature Scottish Fare

The Shoap's morning offering centers around their freshly baked morning rolls - available in soft, crispy or well-fired varieties - filled with authentic Scottish ingredients like square sausage (Lorne sausage) and tattie scones. These breakfast staples have developed a cult following, with customers often queuing early to secure these nostalgic Scottish treats before they sell out.

The lunch menu features traditional Scotch pies, hearty sandwiches (known as "pieces" in Scottish parlance), and creative interpretations of Glasgow classics like chicken pakora with pink sauce. Sweet-toothed visitors can enjoy Empire biscuits, shortbread, and other Scottish baked goods made in-house daily.

A Scottish Pantry in London

Beyond the café offerings, The Shoap functions as a well-stocked deli with carefully selected products from across Scotland. The shelves are lined with artisanal goods including Glasgow's Bare Bones Chocolate, charcuterie from East Coast Cured in Leith, preserves from the Isle of Arran, and Scottish staples like Irn Bru, Tennent's lager, and Mackie's crisps.

Atmosphere and Experience

The Shoap has created a welcoming community hub for Scottish expats missing a taste of home, as well as curious Londoners eager to explore Scottish cuisine beyond the stereotypes. The space combines café seating with deli shelving in a bright, modern setting that celebrates Scottish food culture without resorting to tartan clichés.

With its commitment to authentic Scottish ingredients, house-baked goods, and friendly service, The Shoap offers a genuine taste of Scotland that goes far beyond deep-fried Mars bars and haggis. Whether you're a homesick Scot or simply curious about the rich culinary traditions of Caledonia, this Islington gem provides a delicious education in Scottish scran.
